BIS Research Results
To estimate the number of boaters in the Puget Sound region (our potential customer base) we used the Puget Sound National Estuary report (March, 2001): "Puget Sounders own more than 165,000 powerboats, 21,500 sailboats, 45,000 canoes/kayaks and other personal watercraft."

We found that 10% of the 610 boaters we surveyed had two or more boats. If we assume this is representative of the entire Puget Sound boating community, the 231,500 boats estimated in the March 2001 report belong to approximately 200,000 boat owners.
Of those surveyed, 41% identified themselves as sailors, 44% as powerboaters, 10% as fishermen, 14% as kayakers, and 9% as windsurfers / kiteboarders.
In order to identify those who belonged to more than one group, boaters were allowed to select multiple categories if appropriate.

With 610 surveys, our results have a 95% confidence level with a +/- 4% margin of error.
