What data do boaters want?
Boaters have indicated their top priorities are weather (primarily wind speed) and tide information prior to departure. Most boaters (77%) currently use the Web to find this information.
The next highest priorities for boaters are long-term forecasts, charts, and mooring information to allow them to plan trips using BIS.
Boaters have moderate interest in water depth and recreational destination information, and apparently do not see a need to have recreational information in advance.
There is little interest at this time for wireless web content at sea. We know that few boaters have access to satellites or cell towers at this time. What we don't know is how many boaters would want access to the Internet from their boats once the option is available.
